Metcalfe Plant Hire is pleased to announce the appointment of Bobby Armstrong as its new Plant Hire Manager, marking a proud moment for the business as Bobby steps into the role after more than 11 years with the company.

Bobby’s journey at Metcalfe began in the yard, where he started out washing and fuelling plant and machinery. Over time, he began supporting the office team alongside his yard-based role, before moving into the office permanently six years ago. This hands-on progression has given Bobby a strong, all-round understanding of the business – from day-to-day yard operations through to customer service, hire coordination and sales.

Now, as Plant Hire Manager, Bobby’s role combines time spent in the yard, in the office, and out meeting customers. His practical experience and in-depth knowledge of Metcalfe’s plant and equipment mean he understands exactly what customers need and can confidently advise on the right solutions for their projects.

As Metcalfe continues to grow and look ahead to 2026, Bobby’s appointment comes at an exciting time for the business. With major infrastructure schemes such as the Carlisle Southern Link Road already underway, and future involvement in the A66 upgrade project, the company is well-positioned for continued expansion across Cumbria and the wider region.

In his new role, Bobby will focus on building on the strong foundations already in place within the Plant Hire team, developing new contracts, and growing external projects while maintaining the high standards of service Metcalfe is known for.

Speaking about his appointment, Bobby said: “I’m really proud to be stepping into the role of Plant Hire Manager. I’ve grown up with the business in many ways, starting out in the yard and learning how everything works from the ground up. That experience has given me a solid foundation and a real understanding of our plant, our customers and our team. I’m looking forward to building on the great work already happening and supporting Metcalfe’s continued growth.”

Bobby is a local lad from Penrith, married, and a keen golfer when he’s not at work – a familiar face to many customers and colleagues alike.
